## Choose the profile requested by the destination

Use RGB for screen artwork and follow the printer's published requirement for print. Do not convert to CMYK only because the result will be printed. Some services, including [Printful, request sRGB IEC61966-2.1 and perform their own production conversion](https://help.printful.com/hc/en-us/articles/50264003313041-Should-I-use-RGB-or-CMYK-for-Printful-print-files?ref=theprocreate.com). Keep an editable master before creating destination-specific exports.

Choose the color space before painting: [Procreate cannot switch an existing canvas from RGB to CMYK or from CMYK to RGB](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/colors/colors-profiles?ref=theprocreate.com). You can change profiles within its current color space. RGB or CMYK is the first decision; the recipient’s named profile is the next.

## Use RGB for screen destinations

Websites, social platforms, and most display workflows expect RGB images. In Procreate, create the canvas with an RGB profile that suits the destination and export the requested PNG or JPEG. Use sRGB as a starting point when a web service does not publish a more specific profile, and confirm the exported file meets that service's requirements.

## Read the printer's current requirement

Ask the receiving printer for the color space, named ICC profile and file format for the exact product. A local fine-art printer may provide an ICC profile or ask for a particular CMYK file. If those instructions are missing, get them confirmed before choosing a generic CMYK preset.

For Printful, its [current guidance recommends a final PNG or JPEG with the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 profile embedded](https://help.printful.com/hc/en-us/articles/50264003313041-Should-I-use-RGB-or-CMYK-for-Printful-print-files?ref=theprocreate.com). That requirement applies to Printful. Another printer’s RGB or CMYK specification may be different.

## Choose the profile at canvas creation

1. In Gallery, tap **+**, then the rectangle-with-plus icon to open the custom-canvas interface.
2. Open **Color profile**. [Procreate separates the RGB and CMYK profile lists](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/colors/colors-profiles?ref=theprocreate.com); select the color space the recipient requests.
3. Select the named profile in that space. For Printful, choose **sRGB IEC61966-2.1** in the RGB list. If the printer supplies a custom profile, the handbook documents **Import** for adding it.
4. Return to **Dimensions** to check **Width** and **Height** for the required output. Tap [**Create** at the top right](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/gallery/gallery-create?ref=theprocreate.com) to create the canvas.

The profile affects how colors are represented in the document. Set it from the destination specification before painting; an existing canvas’s profile menu stays within its current RGB or CMYK space.

Choose the recipient’s named profile before painting. Printful requests sRGB; other printers may specify another workflow.

## Proof the actual handoff

Check the final exported file you will send, including its pixel dimensions and embedded profile. Procreate’s **Canvas information > Color profile** describes the source artwork. Its profile name, a PNG or JPEG extension, and a similar-looking preview do not prove which profile is embedded in the delivery file.

If Photoshop desktop is already available and supports that file format, use this profile-preserving check:

![Two possible export states: keep a known embedded profile; stop and confirm the intended profile when it is missing.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/87/95/8795a9f5-73f0-42fe-8d7c-6a02022d8b40/content/images/2026/10/procreate-rgb-or-cmyk-body2-redo-v1.webp)

Preserve a known embedded profile for inspection. A missing profile needs confirmation before correction.

1. Record the current Color Settings before changing them. Before opening the export, go to [**Edit > Color Settings** and set the relevant RGB, CMYK or Gray policy to **Preserve Embedded Profiles**](https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/desktop/adjust-color/choose-colors/manage-color-profiles-when-opening-images.html?ref=theprocreate.com). Enable **Profile Mismatches > Ask When Opening** and **Missing Profiles > Ask When Opening**, then select **OK**.
2. Open the actual final saved export. If a profile-mismatch dialog appears, select **Use the embedded profile**. If a missing-profile warning appears, stop and record that the file has no embedded profile. Confirm the intended source and delivery profiles before correcting it: [Photoshop’s working-space interpretation of an untagged file](https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/desktop/adjust-color/color-profiles/color-profiles.html?ref=theprocreate.com) does not establish that the file was tagged.
3. For a file opened with its embedded profile preserved, select the document status menu beside the status display at the bottom of the document window. Choose [**Document Profile** to read the image’s profile name](https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/image-information.html?ref=theprocreate.com), and compare it with the recipient’s specification.
4. Finish without assigning or converting a profile, editing, resaving or re-exporting the file. Restore the earlier Color Settings if you changed them.

If no suitable inspector is available, ask the printer or designer to confirm the profile in the unchanged actual file. Leave that check unconfirmed until they do. For important print work, use the printer’s proofing process or order a sample. A correct profile label alone cannot predict the printed result for a particular combination of paper, ink, calibration and final viewing light.

## RGB and CMYK describe different production systems

Screens produce color with red, green, and blue light. Printing combines inks or pigments on a physical surface. Their reproducible color ranges differ, so very bright screen colors may not have an exact printed equivalent even when the file is prepared correctly.

## Make each delivery copy from the layered master

Keep a [native .procreate master with its original layers, masks and effects](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/actions/actions-share?ref=theprocreate.com). Generate each delivery copy from that source, rather than repeatedly converting one flattened file between RGB and CMYK.

![An editable layered chameleon master supplies separate screen and printer copies, each governed by its recipient specification.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/87/95/8795a9f5-73f0-42fe-8d7c-6a02022d8b40/content/images/2026/10/procreate-rgb-or-cmyk-body3-redo-v2.webp)

Prepare each destination copy from the layered master; keep the source intact.

Name each copy by destination and revision, and archive the receiving specification with it. If a printer requests a correction, revise from the master and create a new derivative for that handoff.

## Plan for colors that the destination cannot reproduce

[Bright RGB colors can fall outside the range that printing can reproduce](https://help.printful.com/hc/en-us/articles/50264003313041-Should-I-use-RGB-or-CMYK-for-Printful-print-files?ref=theprocreate.com). Conversion can change their appearance even when the file is technically correct. Identify critical saturated colors early and avoid building the entire composition around a glow that only works on the iPad display.

Soft proofing and profile previews can indicate risk, but they do not replace the receiving printer's process or a physical sample. View the work on a reasonably calibrated display, compare important neutrals and skin tones, and ask how the printer handles out-of-gamut colors.

## Can I convert an RGB Procreate canvas to CMYK later?

At [Actions > Canvas > Canvas information > Color profile, you can change profiles only within the current RGB or CMYK space](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/colors/colors-profiles?ref=theprocreate.com). This menu cannot switch an existing canvas to the other color space. The handbook also warns that a profile change can dramatically affect the time-lapse’s appearance; preserve the original before changing a working copy.

For new artwork, start a separate canvas in the required space. For finished artwork that must be delivered in another space, agree a separate conversion with the printer or use a suitable external editor following its specification. Check the resulting derivative’s profile and proof. Creating another canvas is not an automatic transfer of the original layers and masks; keep the native layered master unchanged.

Choose the output dimensions separately with the [canvas-size guide](https://theprocreate.com/export-print/procreate-canvas-size-for-print/); changing the color model does not add printable detail.
