## The clipping mask needs visible base pixels

[A Procreate clipping mask follows the shape and visibility of its base layer](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/layers/layers-mask?ref=theprocreate.com). The empty interior enclosed by line art is still transparent; an outline alone does not provide a painted base for broad shading. In a consecutive clipping chain, several clipped layers can share the same base below them. When the clipped paint disappears, clips to the wrong object, or spills after a layer move, check the base layer and the order of the stack. Check the Clipping Mask setting as well. Make these checks before changing brush settings.

Clipped paint appears only over existing base pixels; a closed outline can still have a transparent interior.

## Turn on Clipping Mask

In Procreate 5.4 for iPad, place the paint or texture layer directly above the painted shape layer it should follow. In Layers, tap the upper paint layer once to select it, then tap it again to open Layer Options and [tap Clipping Mask](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/layers/layers-options?ref=theprocreate.com). The bottom layer in the stack cannot be clipped because it has no layer beneath it. Use a duplicate before rearranging an established stack.

## Check the base shape in a duplicate

The base layer’s transparency defines the visible area: a filled silhouette reveals broad shading, while sparse linework reveals only narrow strokes. For shading across the interior of an outlined object, use a filled color-flat layer as the base and keep the line art separate above the shading.

[Reference lets ColorDrop use line art as the boundary for fills on another active layer](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/layers/layers-options?ref=theprocreate.com). Enabling Reference does not paint the empty area of your clipping base. If you need to create or repair that fill, use the [ColorDrop troubleshooting guide](https://theprocreate.com/fixes/procreate-colordrop-not-working/) before adding clipped shading.

Use a temporary full-layer fill to inspect base coverage only in a copy. [Fill Layer overrides the base layer’s existing contents when Alpha Lock is off](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/layers/layers-options?ref=theprocreate.com); with Alpha Lock on, transparent areas remain untouched.

1. In the Gallery, [swipe left on the artwork thumbnail and tap Duplicate](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/gallery/gallery-organize?ref=theprocreate.com), then open the duplicate. Keep the original canvas intact.
2. Select the controlling base layer in the copy and turn Alpha Lock off if it is enabled. If a selection is active, [tap the Selection button again to cancel it](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/selections/selections-interface?ref=theprocreate.com).
3. Choose a solid color, open the base’s Layer Options, and tap Fill Layer. Keep the other layer settings steady while inspecting where the clipped paint becomes visible.
4. Undo the temporary fill immediately, whether or not it helped. Use the change in visible footprint to inspect base coverage, then repair the intended silhouette in a deliberate working version.

The clipped layer keeps its own paint, opacity, blend mode, and transform. Moving its paint leaves the base shape fixed; changing the base changes the visible footprint of the clipped chain.

## Check which layer is active

A blue highlight in Layers marks the active layer. Paint on the clipped layer, not the base, if you want shading or texture to remain separate. If the stroke appears outside the shape, reopen Layer Options and confirm that Clipping Mask is still enabled after any layer move or duplication.

![Blue active Paint layer clipped above the separate Base, with the shading stored in Paint.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/87/95/8795a9f5-73f0-42fe-8d7c-6a02022d8b40/content/images/2026/10/procreate-clipping-mask-not-working-body2-redo-v2.webp)

Select the clipped Paint layer before shading to keep the base shape separate.

## Find the base in a clipping chain

Several consecutive clipped layers can share one base. Within the same layer stack, start at the affected layer and follow the consecutive clipped paint layers downward to the first layer with Clipping Mask turned off. That layer is the controlling base for the chain. An inserted layer with Clipping Mask off changes the base for clipped paint above it; clipped layers below the interruption can still use the original base. An empty inserted base may hide the upper paint. Confirm Clipping Mask on each intended clipped layer after moving or duplicating layers. [Moving a clipped layer to the bottom deactivates Clipping Mask](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/layers/layers-mask?ref=theprocreate.com); check its state again after reordering. Hide the clipped layers, then restore them one at a time to find the first unexpected result.

![Consecutive Texture and Shadow clipping layers share Base; after a normal Inserted layer enters, Texture depends on Inserted while Shadow still depends on Base.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/87/95/8795a9f5-73f0-42fe-8d7c-6a02022d8b40/content/images/2026/10/procreate-clipping-mask-not-working-body3-redo-v2.webp)

Trace each clipped layer down to the first normal base; an inserted normal layer changes the upper relationship.

If the order is correct but paint still looks missing, check visibility, opacity, and blend modes on the base and affected clipped layer. Note their settings before changing them. In the duplicate, temporarily compare both layers using Normal at full opacity, then restore their original settings. A low-opacity base or a blend mode over a particular color can make paint faint without breaking the chain.

Paint that matches the visible base or background may also be hard to distinguish. In the copy, draw a short stroke in a contrasting color on the clipped layer, over a painted part of the base, then Undo that stroke after inspecting it. This is an appearance check; it does not establish the cause of missing paint by itself.

## Choose Clipping Mask or Alpha Lock

For [edits that need a separate paint layer](https://theprocreate.com/learn/layers-masks-comparison/), choose Clipping Mask. Use [Alpha Lock to paint directly into pixels that already exist on the layer](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/layers/layers-mask?ref=theprocreate.com).

Keep a layered master before merging. [Merge Down combines the active layer with the layer below](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/layers/layers-options?ref=theprocreate.com), so they can no longer be edited as separate objects. Preserve the separate paint and base while you are diagnosing the clipping relationship.
