## Reserve editable parts before drawing

Start with the required output dimensions, then allocate layers to revisions you expect. I'd plan a new illustration in that order, since canvas size affects the layer limit. To free space in an existing document, see [the layer-limit guide](https://theprocreate.com/learn/procreate-layer-limit/).

## Set the output size first

Enter the required output dimensions and [the final destination's color profile](https://theprocreate.com/export-print/procreate-rgb-or-cmyk/) first. On the iPad you'll use, tap **+** at the top right of the Gallery, then the [icon showing a rectangle with + to open Custom Canvas](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/gallery/gallery-create?ref=theprocreate.com). Choose **Dimensions**. Tap **Width** and **Height** to enter the required values, and use the unit buttons to the left of the keypad to select the matching units. If the requirement is a physical size, enter [the destination's required DPI](https://theprocreate.com/export-print/procreate-canvas-size-for-print/) as well. Read and record **Maximum Layers** after setting those values, then compare it with the planned paint layers and reserve.

Procreate bases the [maximum layer count on iPad RAM and canvas pixel dimensions](https://help.procreate.com/articles/YB7CjQ-maximum-layer-limit?ref=theprocreate.com). Larger canvases allow fewer layers; smaller canvases allow more. Keep the required output size fixed unless the destination agrees to a smaller file. Reducing pixel dimensions removes pixels from that output.

![Custom Canvas Dimensions example with Maximum Layers highlighted below Width, Height and DPI.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/87/95/8795a9f5-73f0-42fe-8d7c-6a02022d8b40/content/images/2026/10/procreate-layer-budget-body1-redo-v1.webp)

Read Maximum Layers after entering the required dimensions. These are example values; use the capacity shown on your own iPad.

## Example budget for a simple leaf illustration

For an illustrative plan, start with five paint layers and reserve two unused slots for revisions. The numbers are a planning example. They aren't a measured iPad limit, so check that the actual canvas permits the plan before drawing.

![Five planned paint layers with Clipped shadow directly above Leaf base and the sketch hidden.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/87/95/8795a9f5-73f0-42fe-8d7c-6a02022d8b40/content/images/2026/10/procreate-layer-budget-body2-redo-v2.webp)

Keep Leaf base and Clipped shadow separate while shape, body color or lighting may change. The five-layer structure is an example to check against actual capacity.

| Planned layer | Keep separate for | Possible consolidation checkpoint |
| ------------------ | -------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Sketch | Composition and silhouette corrections | Hide after the clean shape is approved; retain it in the native checkpoint. |
| Leaf base | Shape and body-color changes | Keep separate while it defines clipped shading. |
| Clipped shadow | Lighting strength or direction | Merge only in a duplicate after that light is approved. |
| Details | Removing or reducing accents | Consolidate approved details when they no longer need independent edits. |
| Painted background | Background color and texture revisions | Keep separate if another colorway is expected. |

Suppose, purely as a planning example, your recorded capacity were six layers: the five-layer plan plus two reserved slots would need seven. If the details won't need separate removal or recoloring, plan to paint them on an already-planned layer instead of allocating **Details**. Four paint layers plus two reserved slots fit six. If all five components need independent edits, five plus one reserve fits only when one spare slot covers the expected revisions. Keep **Leaf base** and **Clipped shadow** separate while shape, body-color or lighting changes still depend on them. If neither choice covers the work, change the document plan rather than shrink the required output without the destination's agreement.

![Two six-slot planning examples use four paint layers with two reserves or five paint layers with one reserve.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/87/95/8795a9f5-73f0-42fe-8d7c-6a02022d8b40/content/images/2026/10/procreate-layer-budget-body3-redo-v2.webp)

Both allocations fit six slots in this planning example. Combine details only when they need no separate edit; keep five paint layers only if one reserve is enough.

In the original five-plus-two plan, the two reserved slots could hold a color alternative or an extra correction. If you add masks or paint passes, recheck the displayed capacity against the changed plan. I'd spend separate layers on the edits that would cost the most to rebuild. Each tiny mark doesn't need its own layer.

## Protect the editable master

Before merging, [duplicate the artwork](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/gallery/gallery-organize?ref=theprocreate.com) for the working version and [export a native .procreate checkpoint through Actions > Share > Procreate](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/actions/actions-share?ref=theprocreate.com). Save that export to [an identified location in Files](https://theprocreate.com/export-print/backup-procreate-artwork/), and record its filename and version. The native format preserves layers, masks and effects. Keep the saved checkpoint separate from the version you'll merge.

Return to the Gallery and use the [Import button at the top right to open Files](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/gallery/gallery-import-share?ref=theprocreate.com). Navigate to the saved checkpoint's folder and tap that actual `.procreate` file. On a compatible Procreate version, open the imported canvas and inspect the expected layers and masks before relying on it for recovery. If it doesn't open or the required structure is missing, stop before merging and resolve the checkpoint. Give the checkpoint and merged working version distinct names so the working version can't silently replace the only full copy.

## Choose consolidation points before they become urgent

Mark approval points in the plan: silhouette approved, lighting approved, background approved. Only layers that no longer need separate edits are candidates for merging in a verified working copy. [Merge Down combines the selected layer with the one directly below it](https://help.procreate.com/procreate/handbook/layers/layers-options?ref=theprocreate.com). After that, they can no longer be edited separately. Keep line-art sources and masks separate while the next revision may depend on them.

## Adjust the plan to the actual capacity

If the displayed capacity can't accommodate the required revisions and reserve, simplify the approved background or details, or choose a different document plan. Reduce pixels only if the destination accepts the smaller output. Brush lag on its own doesn't prove you've reached the maximum layer count. Check the document's actual capacity before changing this plan.
